The purpose of this view is to show the hierarchical structure of components that make up a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).  In addition it shows that an Experiment may analyze many samples using Standards, Controls and different SOPs and that each Experiment has a run number or tag for keeping track of re-running of the same Experiment.

The hierarchical structure shows that an SOP is composed of a number of Lab Tasks, which may represent discrete lab functions designated by the Type,  and an order number that represents their position within an SOP workflow. Examples of  Lab function are Sample Preparation, Data Acquisition and Data Analysis. Each Lab Task may be composed of one or more protocols or methods that are to be carried out in a specific order.  Each protocol will have Instructions or a recipe for what is to be done in the task or assay,  a type designation, an estimated time used for scheduling and a sequence order number. Refer to SOP-Workflow for an example based upon this structure.  In addition a protocol may have a data entry form for recording parameters, instrument settings and/or control measurements.  The acquired and analyzed data is usually linked to the protocol and not entered into the protocol's form. This is due to a natural separation between user entered data and instrument generated data which may be Megabytes in size such as from mass spectrums, Gel Images, pictures or Microarray scan images which are stored as Binary Large Objects (BLOBS) in databases or files on a media such as hard drives.

This electronic notebook structure provides the capability for generating all types of reports and retrieving data for integrated analysis. Queries such as

In addition, the structure permits evolution and extension through versioning (not shown) of SOPs by the addition of Tasks, Protocols and Protocol parameters. Versioning ensures that a historical record of all changes is maintained and that Experimental results can be reviewed and understood based upon the correct SOPs that were used.
